Architectural Design Studio I

3 Credits

ECTS: 12

The course emphasizing the importance of and the need for the relationship of the theoretical studies in architecture and other disciplines, with the design process itself, proceeds on the basis of architectural design studies, with a view to enabling the student with the required infrastructure, access to knowledge, and interpretation skills. In this context, the theoretical and conceptual perspectives of other disciplines (history, environment, technology, psychology etc.) will be analyzed, with a view to interpreting and transforming them to design knowledge so as to provide input to design activities.

MİM 504

Architectural Design Studio II

3 Credits

ECTS: 12

Organized as a sequel to Architectural Design Studio I, the course proceeds with project activities to ensure the development of the theoretical framework to serve as the foundations of thesis studies. The theoretical knowledge of other disciplines (engineering, environment, humanities and social sciences) are transformed into and interpreted as design knowledge, with the outcomes of the project serving as input for the thesis.

MİM 505

Architectural Landscaping

3 Credits

ECTS: 6

The course investigates the relationship between architecture, urban design, and landscaping, and discusses the role of the buildings in cities –their contribution to the city and urban space against the background of the development, evolution, and change of the urban texture. The continuity, typologies, and morphological characteristics of the buildings as elements of urban texture will be coupled with an interpretation of the urban texture against a historical process, on physical-social, public-private planes.

MİM 506

Design Theories

3 Credits

ECTS: 6

Through a review of various design theories and methods hitherto employed in the development of the design product, fundamental concepts and terms will be introduced in the light of perspectives of various schools. The analysis of the design process, as well as the development of a theory specific to design will be discussed.

MİM 507

Change in Cultural Environment

3 Credits

ECTS: 6

Through a review of the rapid change in traditional settlements, and the relationship of the cultural values and traditions with the modernization process, the course will analyze the rehabilitation of historical settlements, evaluate the impact of cultural interactions and visits to historical urban settlements on these sites, and thus will facilitate the contribution of cultural factors in the planning of urban development in the future.

MİM 508

Digital Architecture and Fabrication

3 Credits

ECTS: 6

In this course, the students will be using computer assisted design software as the design input, producing various design objects and/or structural elements using the CAD/CAM tools. The structural elements thus designed will then be tried on 1:1 prototypes.

MİM 509

Virtual Reality in Architecture

3 Credits

ECTS: 6

The course covering the design of a virtual world and the design of buildings in a virtual world, the students will engage in designs covering cooperation in virtual 3D worlds, interaction design, education, socialization, and entertainment.

MİM 510

Cooperative Design in Virtual Environments

3 Credits

ECTS: 6

This course will try and teach the use of real-time and other cooperation technologies for design purposes. Upon completing the course, the students will gain experience on face-to-face design, design with remote cooperation, and the management of such design processes.

MİM 511

Digital Design Workshop

3 Credits

ECTS: 6

The course entails designs on the topics and contexts to be selected by the students, entailing the use of advanced technologies such as digital design, parametric design, and computed design through design processes.

MİM 512

Study of Design Behavior

3 Credits

ECTS: 6

The course will teach design processes, and various techniques and methods concerning the study of design behavior as a perceptual activity.

MİM 513

Historiography in Architecture

3 Credits

ECTS: 6

Proceeding on a narrative of the history of architecture, from its development as an independent discipline, the course engages in the analyses of the contents of the basic texts of the field, and research methods. Through an in-depth reading of the basic texts selected by the students with reference to their areas of interest, the course discusses the limits and capabilities of the discipline.

MİM 514

Contemporary Turkish Architecture

3 Credits

ECTS: 6

The assessment of current practices on space and the impact of changing design and implementation forms of the era in a critical framework, as well as the reflection of technological developments on Turkish architecture, in the light of contemporary readings on architecture as well as theoretical texts.

MİM 515

The History of the City

3 Credits

ECTS: 6

The course providing a channel to convey the methods, analyses, and methods required to review the economic, social and architectural characteristics of the cultures which shared the same region in the past, allows the students to understand and further investigate the current state of the cities against the background of history.

MİM 516

Global Metropolises and Architecture

3 Credits

ECTS: 6

The global metropolises which often served as the background to the development of numerous architecture perspectives as well as new building typologies (London, New York, Amsterdam, Milan, Berlin, Chicago, Beijing etc.) will be studied with reference to buildings and urban textures covered by contemporary architecture indices.

MİM 517

Urban Readings: Istanbul, Ankara

3 Credits

ECTS: 6

Two cities which play a major part in the development and the future of Turkey –Istanbul and Ankara– are put under the focus to have a reading of their physical and historical layers.
