In this course, students learn the historical development of psychology, major psychological theories, and the fundamental subfields of psychology. In this context, an introduction is provided to core topics in psychology, including the biological bases of behavior, sensation and perception, cognition, learning, memory, and cognitive processes.
PSİ 104  Introduction to Psychology II (Eng) Prerequisite: - 6
In this course, students learn the fundamental topics and theories of psychology as a continuation of the Introduction to Psychology I course. In this context, an introduction is provided to core topics in psychology, including intelligence assessment, lifespan development, motivation, emotion and the relationship between stress and health, personality, psychological disorders, and methods of therapy.
PSİ 108            Research Methods for Psychology (Eng) Prerequisite: - 6
In this course, it is aimed to teach students the scientific research methods used in psychology as a scientific discipline. For this purpose, students will learn hypothesis development and types of variables, cause–effect relationships and sampling, the concepts of reliability and validity, qualitative and quantitative data collection methods, experimental and quasi-experimental methods, and the reporting of analyzed data.
PSİ 203  Statistics for Psychology I (Eng) Prerequisite: - 7
The aim of this course is to understand the fundamental concepts related to research methods and statistics, to comprehend the basic processes of research, and to acquire report-writing skills. In this context, topics include probability, statistical notation, frequency tables, frequency distributions and their graphical representations, measures of central tendency, percentiles, standard scores, normal distribution, hypothesis testing, the z-test, correlation, and regression, and practical applications are conducted using SPSS or JASP.
PSİ 204  Statistics for Psychology II (Eng) Prerequisite: PSİ 203 7
Topics that constitute a continuation of Statistics I for Psychology are covered in this course. In this context, single- and two-sample t-tests, simple and mixed-design ANOVA, multiple regression, and the concepts of sampling and estimation are addressed, and practical applications are conducted using SPSS or JASP.
PSİ 210  Social Psychology (Eng) Prerequisite: PSİ 104 6
In this course, the definition of social psychology, the relationship between theory and practice in social psychology, and methods in social psychology are covered. Within this scope, topics include conformity, altruism, helping behavior, collective influences on individual behavior, interpersonal relations and the relationship between sociology and psychology, social power, group psychology and decision-making strategies, attribution theory, interpersonal attraction and repulsion, hostility, aggression, prosocial behavior, and the social and physical environment.
PSİ 220 Learning (Eng) Prerequisite: PSİ 104 6
A fundamental overview of learning psychology, its definition, basic concepts of learning, and the biological and psychological bases of learning are addressed. Classical learning theories (Pavlov, Skinner), the mental discipline theory, and the theory of affective impressions are examined, and the applications of these theories are discussed with examples.
PSİ 240 Developmental Psychology (Eng) Prerequisite: PSİ 104 6
This course covers an introduction to developmental theories and developmental periods. In addition to developmental domains such as motor development, cognitive development, language and intelligence development, and emotional development, topics including parent–child interaction, discipline, dependency, aggression, child abuse, social development, play, and moral development are addressed.
PSİ 260 Research and Application Ethics for Psychology (Eng) Prerequisite: - 6
This course concerns the ethical principles that exist in the research and practice of psychology. In addition to general ethical problems, ethical principles concerning responsibilities toward humans and animals in psychological research and applications are addressed. Throughout the course, students are informed about ethical problems in different subdisciplines of psychology, including research, counseling, education, clinical practice, therapy, and other fields, and about how these problems are handled. Topics such as confidentiality, conflict of interest, ethical competence, and unethical practices are covered.
PSİ 312 Personality Theories  Prerequisite: PSİ 104 6
Definitions of personality, major debates, and the structure of personality theories are addressed. Topics include psychodynamic, humanistic, and existential approaches; early emotional and social development; the cognitive self and self-efficacy; locus of control; achievement; and gender-related differences.
PSİ 313 Organizational Behavior (Eng) Prerequisite: - 6
This course focuses on organizational behavior at the individual, group, and organizational levels. In this context, theories, concepts, and empirical findings related to behavior in organizations are examined.
PSİ 320 Cognitive Psychology (Eng) Prerequisite: PSİ 104 6
This course covers the historical development of cognitive psychology and, together with contemporary approaches, examines cognitive processes such as perception, memory, encoding, storage, and retrieval.
PSİ 322 Biopsychology (Eng) Prerequisite: PSİ 104 6
This course examines how the physiological, genetic, and developmental mechanisms of behavior in humans and nonhuman animals are explained using the principles of biology, particularly neurobiology. Topics include the nervous system, neurotransmitters, and brain circuits underlying both typical and atypical behavior.
PSİ 326    Measurement and Evaluation in Psychology (Eng)   Prerequisite:  PSİ 103   3  6
Within the scope of this course, students learn the psychometric properties of scientific research and analysis methods used in psychology and acquire skills such as establishing norms, testing validity and reliability, and learning assessment methods used in psychological research.
PSİ 332 Psychopathology (Eng)  Prerequisite: PSİ 104 6
A historical overview of the field is provided. The concepts of normal and abnormal behavior are examined. Theoretical explanations of abnormal behavior are discussed. The types of adult psychopathology and the most recent classification methods are reviewed.
PSİ 333 Introduction to Interviewing Techniques (Eng)   Prerequisite: PSİ 104    3  6
The aim of this course is to introduce the principles of diagnostic assessment interviewing techniques in the field of clinical psychology and to develop fundamental skills related to these techniques. In this context, students learn interviewing techniques and acquire skills necessary for an effective interview process, such as active listening, empathy, rapport building, and asking appropriate questions.
PSİ 455 Clinical Psychology  Prerequisite: PSİ 104  6
Within the scope of this course, students gain knowledge about the definition and theories of clinical psychology, its subfields, the general characteristics of psychotherapy, the client–therapist relationship, the roles and responsibilities of the clinical psychologist, and approaches to assessment and intervention.

 

Elective Courses

Students enrolled in the Undergraduate Program in the Department of Psychology are required to take a total of nine elective courses during their period of study. Three of these electives are university-wide elective courses and are selected from courses offered by departments other than the Department of Psychology.
